Frequently Asked Questions
Vasectomy Center

How effective is vasectomy?

Vasectomy is the most effective of all the methods of birth control. At 99.9% effectiveness, only abstinence beats it. We will conduct two semen tests weeks after your procedure to verify sterility.

Will I be sterile immediately?

A vasectomy procedure does not lead to immediate birth control. It takes several weeks for patients to become sterile and this must be confirmed with two semen analyses prior to stopping alternative birth control methods.

Is vasectomy permanent?

Practically speaking, vasectomy should be considered a permanent birth control procedure. Vasectomy can be reversed if absolutely necessary, however success of a reversal cannot be guaranteed.

How do I get numb with out a needle? Is there any pain?

Our approach is painless. At your initial consult you will be provided with a prescription for an anti-anxiety medication, so you should arrive at the office fairly relaxed. Upon arrival, we’ll apply a topical anesthetic. This takes approximately 20 minutes to take effect. Next, you’ll be brought into our luxurious surgical-suite where we’ll apply a stronger anesthetic using a high-powered spray. At this point, you’re fully numbed and the surgeon proceeds with the vasectomy.

“How is it a No Scalpel procedure? Don’t they have to get in there?”

They do need to get in there. Instead of using a scalpel which makes a large incision, they use a device that “opens” up your skin, creating an aperture usually less than 5mm round. This approach typically eliminates the need for stitches and heals faster.

What is the recovery like?

Our recovery room is a relaxing place you may not want to leave! It’s equipped with comfortable robes and slippers, flat-screen TV’s with Netflix, cappuccino, and top-shelf liquor. We’ll do everything we can to keep you comfortable after the procedure. Clients are urged to return home or to their hotel room immediately upon discharge and avoid strenuous activity or excessive walking for 48 hours. Use an ice pack 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off while relaxing in bed or on your couch for 36-48 hours. Expect mild bruising and swelling but pain should be minimal and easily controlled with Tylenol or your prescription pain medication. Most men can resume gentle sexual activity, work and exercise in 48 hours.

Do I need a ride home after the procedure?

Yes, we recommend having someone else drive you home. We’ll also be happy to arrange transportation back to your home or hotel for you.

Will vasectomy affect my sex life?

Vasectomy has absolutely no effect on sex drive, erection, orgasm, or ejaculation. Vasectomy only blocks sperm, and there is no effect on testosterone. Many men and women actually say that the relief from concern about pregnancy has improved their sex lives after vasectomy.

What is the risk of complications?

Vasectomy procedures are minor surgical procedures associated with minimal risk. Obsidian surgeons have extensive experience in performing vasectomy surgery minimizing risk even further. But, no surgical procedure is without some risk. Our urologists will take their time to discuss risks with clients during their consultation and answer all questions to the fullest extent possible.
